I went to a neighbor’s yard sale this weekend and she handed me a coffee mug which reads “Father to Bee.” She said I could have it, you know, as a gift.
It was a nice gesture. I smiled and thanked her and didn’t really think much of it until I got home and looked it over. Several thoughts struck me:
1. It’s a pretty damn ugly coffee mug with a really bad pun on it. There’s no way she could have sold this thing.
2. It has a copyright date of 1984 (Beegotten Creations, Inc.), but her own son was born in 1996.
3. This means that it more than likely came from somewhere else… like someone else’s yard sale.
So… my neighbor cared enough about me to give me a disturbingly unattractive old coffee mug that she bought at a yard sale over ten years ago and was, in all likelihood, going to throw out.
In some part of my brain I still think of this little token gift as a “nice gesture” but when I really analyze the situation, I can’t imagine why.
I guess it’s the thought that counts.

FATHERHOOD SHOULD BE EXCITING AND FUN. IT HAS BEEN FOR ME.
THE MUG WAS PART OF A GREAT IDEA STARTED IN 1984. THERE WERE MORE ITEMS IN THE PACKAGE. I WONDER IF THE PEOPLE ARE STILL AROUND?July 12th, 2006 at 9:56 am -
