It’s been a rough couple of months for me and technology.
A couple of months ago I turned my iPod on to find that it simply wasn’t working. After some research and wacky experimentation I figured out how to fix my iPod with the sad iPod icon. Then, about a month later, my PC hard drive (damn you, Maxtor!) crashed… hard.
When my PC crashed I was stuck with an iPod filled with about 20GB of music with no easy way to get it back to the replacement hard drive on my PC. I didn’t particularly enjoy the idea of burning 400+ CDs again just to restore music to my PC… especially when that music was all ready and waiting on my iPod.
And maybe… just maybe… I didn’t have all those CDs at my fingertips anymore…
So I started asking around about programs that will allow you to take music off your iPod and put it back on your PC. After trying a couple different programs that were fairly tedious and error prone I finally stumbled across exactly what I needed: PodUtil.
PodUtil is a program that’s written for the Mac AND Windows which will almost magically restore all the music on your iPod back to your PC after a crash. Or before a crash. Or whenever you want. Even better, it allows you to control the file structure of how you want the music to be written to your PC. I personally like the Artist-Album-Song file structure for most of my music.
No, this program isn’t free. Right now it’s just about $20 (US) but considering the fact that it saved me over 40 hours of reloading music on my PC it’s really a hell of a good deal. There is a free trial download so check it out and give it a try.
Your iPod will thank you for it.

You know what’s WORSE than losing your music to a PC crash?
Losing 1500 of your 2000 songs just by updating your iPod.
Yes sir. I updated my iPod and POOF. The rest of the music vanished.
The vocabulary that followed was definitely not something Teletubby-worthy.
Sucks to lose songs. Cause it’s a beeeeatch to get ‘em all back.
Good luck.
