How To Fix The Sony PlayStation PS3 80710092 Error

This is going to be nerdy. Sorry.

As a nerd I feel it is my duty to alert other nerds of solutions to technical problems when I happen to stumble across them, no matter how stupid the problem or the solution may actually be. This particular stupid problems has been cropping up on PlayStation 3′s around the world:

When you try to do just about anything with your PS3 that requires an internet connection (and, really, most everything does these days) you get an 80710092 error in the upper right corner of the screen which tells you there was a problem connecting to the DNS server.

Then, whenever you try to do something you often end up getting an error which reads:

An error has occurred. You have been signed out of PlayStation Network. (80710092) Suggested Action.

You can choose to see the suggested actions. They’re helpful in the same way most Windows error messages are helpful: not at all.

Thanks for the suggested actions, Sony.

This PS3 error is particularly annoying when you just promised your 4 1/2 year old that he can watch an episode of Richard Scarry’s Busytown Mysteries on Netflix for being so good during the day.

This PS3 error is even more annoying when you were already signed into Netflix or you’re in the process of signing into Netflix when it happens. You basically get stuck in a loop where Netflix keeps trying to connect, tells you you’re disconnected, and then asks you to try to connect again (often with those great suggested actions).

There are lots of solutions on the internet about resetting modems, fiddling with DNS settings, using a different router, going to a wired connection, etc. I actually gave up with the PS3′s wireless connection a long time ago because I was tired of spending more time keeping the damn thing connected than actually playing any movies or games.

So, how did I fix the dreaded PS3 error 80710092? This solution seems to work for most people, so give it a shot. Here’s how I fixed the error:

  1. Start your PlayStation (duh).
  2. Go to the PlayStation Network Menu.
  3. Move down to PlayStation Home
  4. Hit the Triangle button on your remote or controller.
  5. Choose to Delete PlayStation Home
  6. Now turn off your PlayStation. Give it a moment and turn the PS3 back on.

You may now have to manually log into the PlayStation Network with the Sign In icon on the PlayStation Network menu, but once you do you’re in and working.

Yes, that’s it. Delete PlayStation Home. Reboot. Proceed.

A few caveats: The PlayStation Home icon will still be there, but it’s technically not installed. PlayStation Home is that Second-Life type of a community where you can build a “hot” virtual avatar and then outfit your virtual avatar with “cool” clothes and meet up with all your “real” friends. If you’re older than 15 you probably shouldn’t be impressed with it. Anyway, I’ve also found that each time I rebooted by PS3 I still had to manually sign into the PlayStation Network. There’s something simply wrong with the automatic signing in (or at least there is for me). Once manually signed in, it seems to stay connected.

Here’s one other trick I learned when I have a program or system update on the PS3 and the progress bar freezes: Go all the way over the the Settings menu and then down to the Network Settings option. Choose that and you’ll see a “Media Server Connection” setting. Disable it and then try downloading or updating that program again. This time it shouldn’t freeze.

Let me know if this gets your PS3 connected again!
