Like a lot of people these days, I spend a good portion of my day using a computer all day while sitting on my ever-widening ass and not really getting a chance to move around much more than the occasional trip to the kitchen for an extra doughnut or to top off my sugar-infused cream-laced coffee. The few times I do get a chance to actually stand up and walk around usually only last for a few minutes at most while I navigate my way to someone’s office or conference room where the chairs are even more plushy and inviting than my own office chair. Walking around actually seems like a pretty novel mode of transportation on some days, which has had me wondering for a while now if there wasn’t a healthier way to do things. Just for the Health of It Of course, I’m not the first person to be wondering if I was sitting around on my butt too long. The New York Times has actually had a couple of different articles advocating standing or walking at your desk instead of sitting but the problems associated with sitting down all day have been documented elsewhere as well.
It’s day 11 and I’m still going strong, spending at least 30 minutes each day exercising with the Nintendo Wii. Most days I strap on the wrist weights and do various activities in Wii Sports and most days I really enjoy it. It turns out that all this video game exercising stuff has now been “proven” to be good for you. The Mayo Clinic has just completed a study claiming that moving with video games can be an effective form of exercise. This “study” compared the energy expenditure of a group of people who sat on the couch and played traditional console video games with people who stood up and had to move around to play the game. This isn’t stated, but one can guess they used a Sony Playstation 2 EyeToy or something similar. The group that had to move around burned more calories. Is this amazingly obvious? Yes. However, it is good to see that even professional organizations like The Mayo Clinic are now taking video games and exercise seriously. If you really want to see a mix of video game exercise ideas from homemade to professional to one-of-a-kind prototypes, head on over to VideoGameWorkout.com. I’ve been reading [...]

Not only am I in a soul-draining dead-end job, but I’m also fat and fairly unattractive. I’d draw you a picture, but I have no artistic talent, either. This year I decided to do something about it. I made the same New Year’s Resolution I make and keep every year: I resolve to keep next year’s resolution. I’ve never failed, so I feel pretty confident that I can make the run again. However, I also made another New Year’s resolution, which is a little more useful. I resolved to lose weight. I started at about 260 and I’m down to around 252ish in four weeks. Not too bad, huh? My ultimate goal is to weigh 180 pounds by the end of 2006. That’s “80 pounds in 52 weeks” and that sounds like another unwatchable Ashton Kutcher movie, though I would argue that any movie with Ashton Kutcher is, by definition, unwatchable. To lose 80 pounds in 52 weeks I need to drop about a pound and a half a week and so far I’m doing pretty well. My problem, as I see it, is that I’m too damn smart for this weight loss thing. I’ve always been a pretty cerebral [...]
